Brighton is a beach front town that is one of the most popular beach destinations in all of England. This city has seen beach vacationers since the 1700. ‘s and has been valued for its medicinal healing powers for just as long. A health spa was first erected here in the 1780. ‘s. As the railroad was built this improved the Access to the area by more people and as a result greatly affected the growth of this area.
Over 8 million people visit this beach town each year. This town is also popular for conventions and organized functions including meetings of the British labor party. This area is also recognized for its academic excellence. There are two major universities in the area.
In the 1500′s this area was recorded in the Domesday Book. This book was a survey that was established to determine the limits of towns and communities for the purpose of taxation. The town was recorded at this time as the town of Bristlemestune. It was determined that this town should be taxed 4000 herring. In 1514 the French invaded the town and destroyed most of the structures that existed at the time. There are few remains from prior to this invasion. One structure that survived the invasion was the St Nicholas Church.
However this original town was destroyed in 1514 by the French during the war between England and France. Very little of this area actually survived one such structure was a St. Nicholas Church that partly managed to make it through the fires that was started by the French.
In the 1700. ‘s this area witnessed a large influx of vacationers. This was as a result of a doctor who recommended to his patients that get seawater for their ailments. This created a health resort and was one of the first of its kind. From this influx of visitors major construction occurred including the fishing village.
One of the people that received this doctor. ‘s advice was the Prince Regent. This prince would later become King George IV. King George was so impressed with the area as a result of his initial visit that he came back and bought a farm and built a royal palace. This palace was the Royal Pavilion. This structure is a truly unique structure and resembles an Indian palace. This pavilion is still recognized today as one of the most unique homes ever built. King George had this home built to provide a place for him to meet with his female acquaintance who happened to be a married woman.
The Royal Pavilion attracts many visitors and is a symbol of the way this beach front town affects its visitors. This attraction to this city is as grand today as it was at the time of King George IV. As a result Brighton has more visitors than just about any beachfront town in Europe.
